Are there any questions for me about the graduation requirement and the recommendation to amend our graduation requirements for the 1920 school year any questions let's go to the next line please so do the covid-19 we were unfortunately not able to celebrate our mathathon winners Ashley had to cancel the second half of it but we would be remiss to not congratulate our mapathon champions from Will Rogers Elementary 3rd grade and with their wonderful coaches of Kevin McClinton and Jacqueline sandelin and wonderful amazing principal Amanda Noriega congratulations to the third grade champions for the math on Xavier Martinez Alexander Munoz Martinez Daniel Rodriguez and Jenny Chan where to go Rogers next line please in our fourth grade champions from Abbott Elementary coach and silver Ortiz Baldwin and principal Kevin, no thank you I'm Jonathan or not Joseph Damian Esparza Adan Gomez and Evelyn Sporto congratulations to Abbott Elementary 4th grade championships for the 1920 school year Math and Science competition and I reckon are students being awarded the syllabi literacy this is awarded to students who have attained Proficiency in two or more language with one of those language being English by graduation we are proud of our students who are receiving this prestigious distinction we have 60 distance from Lynnwood High School 75 from Firebaugh High School the syllabi literacy will place on their diploma they will also receive a certificate during the graduation they also be honored their names will be called and I just want to say congratulations to all the students who made the extra extra effort to to be awarded the syllabi literacy I'm sorry I'm trying to talk to that let me see this is a big deal because I was you learning two languages takes an enormous amount of effort and they prove their Proficiency in both English and Spanish most of these students attend the syllabi Literacy By staying in the same foreign language for 4 years congratulations to all of our students with the syllabi literacy and this is my partner thank you sir thank you. Ridiculous nice job and got to see that we were continue with your presentation we have our 2019-20 retirees and text Lucas will be helping us with this good evening four numbers and Olive Arbor mode Watchers my name Brian Lucas and the crowd assistant superintendent human resources for Linwood schools and this particular recognition is very meaningful to me I think sometimes I'm in a great position at HR because bottom line I like adore School Employees I think that School Employees have a special place because of the work that we do is so so important and it changes lives and we also sometimes conditions aren't exactly the best we don't have did fancy high-rises like in Century City lawyers or things like that but we work very very hard at what we do and give our hearts to the children and to the community and so recognizing those who spent entire career education and all sale in woods is incredibly important and meaningful to me this year we do have a 77 retiree is which is a large number we have 50 certificated and plan to classified and us some of the employees will see when they charge directors review our retirees this year we have some folks that work for Linwood for 42 or 43 years and I don't know about you but 43 no I was just starting grade school and I just I am so overwhelmed by the fact of their commitment to working and supporting the children of Linwood for obviously basically a lie so with no further to do I'm going to have Carlos Zaragoza please join the call and he will inform us all about our certificate retirees festive list of service thank you dr. Hardy so I'm going to start off first on what's been on my mind and then I will I really do want to congratulate all of our students and all of our staff but I think the last couple of days have at least for me really forced me to reflect and our role. leaders because we serve predominant Latino community and I know my own school is predominant Latino and that means that our families are watching a Spanish news and one of the disappointing things in the last couple of days has just been how the Spanish media I've continued to focus on the Looting and all the negative aspects of a button occurring across the country and the reality is. It's not just looting up happening is torches are happening because George Fuller died and police brutality has now reached a point where enough is enough and people are tired but one of the the bigger I think issues at all of this wait for me because I'm having twins with that tomorrow virtually with my kids and I kept thinking about how they took that away from her and how many children have now lost opportunity to have donuts with that for the rest of your life because the police couldn't get it together and they keep being provided the resources to do what they want so I think that it's seen the news the way it's been it's been a very sharp reminder that as Leaders it is our responsibility to have tough conversations with our staff to ensure that our teachers feel equipped to have these conversations with their students even at the elementary level I know that I I saw that we we were being proactive and we held a discussion kind of virtual discussion with some of our high school students and I love that we should be doing that but I always elementary kids and the fact that we don't always think about our little ones and yet those are the students that we really need to ensure we teach about race and diversity because that's always been important I know it's a crucial time to ensure that we talk to them about what they're seen on TV and ensuring that they know the facts and they don't just go off of what they hear the parents talked about because that's how all of this parts are innately to love one another I mean the one thing my little of my God said I hate this when we say okay go take a nap that's it but she doesn't hate anything other than that so I did make sure that this is a time for all of our school today to really take it upon themselves this is my challenge to you as your responsibility to ensure that we teach our kids empathy we remind them of the value of love and and we do our best to promote but united we are so much stronger and not have to wait for another incident to occur in order to this is the time to 3 Ali take action and and I really do hope that as we continue the next couple of weeks I know that as a school district was done a lot and I really do appreciate the leadership from our school board president to our cabinet all the way for punishment at the city I know we're doing our part and yet I know we can still just so much more especially with their little ones so that's a but I also wanted to ensure that I took the opportunity I think our students because I know that as it is they were already so sad that they were losing out on their graduations and whatnot because of the pandemic and now there's almost it's like Cloud over all of us because everyone steals that it is so time but I want to make sure that they do know that their work is being acknowledged and we are so so so proud of you I am I was a little bit emotional when I was seeing the top 10 from both schools about done with this to the east coast trip last year and that's where I met a lot of them are both of our valedictorians I know them one of them was part of our East Coast trip and the other one for those of you. no I know but High School Valedictorian she gave she was a student speaker for Washington as like the last president of at Washington Elementary School and I remember her teacher mr. Crutchfield coming up to me and sharing she's going to do big things like keep an eye out for her and I thought absolutely and that was my first year on the board so I was super excited to meet a potential little Alma but then she just outgrew me and I was like oh my God this girl and she did it again at the promotion she was our speaker so to know that now she's our valedictorian at it's just it's so nice to see our students grow into the leaders that they don't just have the potential to be but we really do we tell them and then they become it and what's a beauty to it to the beauty to mentorship and the beauty to us seeing our students just become where they're meant to be so graduation to all of our graduating students at we're super proud of you and just another shot of my staff miss you but still enjoy your ha ha moment because I can't wait for it and just to all of our district it is such an honor to work to be able to serve with the humidity that is making this a priority I'll tell you first there have been other districts that haven't even released a statement and that says a message in itself so I really really do appreciate and commend the leadership that we've all demonstrated and I hope that we can continue to work together and Stand United against Justin attic race thank you very much Miss Morales thank you mister already I guess I want to start off by acknowledging you mister art I can't imagine the weight of the pressure you must feel as being the only African-American elected official in the city of Lynwood and I want to acknowledge what you've done you speaking out and you helping us getting some kind of perspective because I think that what we are looking for his guidance and then the time which unfortunately most of us feel that we are Boyz II Men from the National Arena that we don't have a president that gave a statement this whole last weekend when things were happening people are struggling to find you know a guy de Fresno issued something that I you know resonated with me and the way that I took it and I remember it is you know he said something to the effect that the protesters or the people that were looting that if they want police ethical beliefs that are responsible that they must exude the same qualities that they seek to get from their police department and one of the other things that you know came to mind. I guess we've all been stroking his back us against the police are the people against the police because it's not all police it's just us Against Racism as a whole and also what I would call institutionalized racism and what we District have done and I've been committed to and I think everybody has on this board and on this administrative team and on the school district is Bridging the Gap of Education between our students and the others and we're usually but we've been bridging that Gap and you know on a day that we acknowledge our top 10 our students are going off to places of higher education which were very proud of a number them to UCLA my and and also USC I won't I won't leave them out but I mean I'm very proud of all of them the ones going to Davis Irvine you know the whole gamut we're very proud of our students but that's our goal our goal is to bridge that Gap doesn't matter where we come from the end of the day what will matter is where we end and that is what our students have control over and that's what I'm here to help and support do and I think everyone else is and even though we are in a dark time in our history it's also a break time in our history as mr. Floyd daughter said Dad change the world and I really hope that that is the case and that her dad and that we will be able to do right by him and picking up the torch not allowing people to forget and for that we all deserve better we don't wonder what's going to happen at the end of this I am I going to get a ticket or is this going to get all minorities feel that way even though our African-American brother seemed to be sacrificed the most and have been unfairly targeted and I'm proud of the people who have Stood Beside our African American community and have March and have walked have talked have debated have had conversations have not shied away from looking at the ugly truth that racism does exist racism has continued to exist and it is an integral part of the fabric of this country and we must change it and we start by recognizing it and then we change it and with that being said I just hope that every continues to have the optimism that we should have because if there's anything that this country stands for its hope and and and that's what we all have is we have hope and we will continue to move Ford everyday we close the year out acknowledging our students and honoring them and also our retirees not to be too biased but I do want to acknowledge mystery procedure after 38 years is calling me quick I thought the matter would never retire I thought he was going to retire 10 years ago but he loves me and I know his daughters are happy that he is finally decided to retire and enjoy grandchildren and I hope all our retirees enjoy their golden years that they so richly deserve and that they enjoy their ha ha moment because they have been in the trenches for so many years and have struggled along with this remove it and to bridge the achievement Gap thank you Miss Gonzalez everyone try to just want to acknowledge that we are in a very difficult but critical time that I know that many of us probably are experiencing a liberal coaster of different heightened emotions like you mind angry sometimes if I'm full of frustration or immense feeling of solidarity and hopefulness and at times even numbness we've been really pushed to have these really difficult conversations and face the facts of what my colleagues are saying that this has been happening right now because of all the systemic and the qualities that have been happening over and over for countries and I know that it really hurts and it's it's hard but it's not okay that someone has to fear for their life just because they exist and I'm proud to say that Ford stands in solidarity for all those that want equality Justice and just human dignity do the work that we do because we know that everyone deserve deserve that and deserves all the opportune and I know that our district isn't perfect there's still so much work that we can do but I I'm also now that I can say that our board is committed to being part of the solution on reflecting on seeing how we can even improve what we are doing and I also want to share my appreciation for all of our staff I know that and our president and president Hardy for taking the opportunity to give our students a voice to share how they're feeling about the death of George Florida the social unrest so I just want to thank you just continue to see how we can continue to listen to our students are communities and just do better for everyone as well I just want to congratulate all of our graduating class so shout out for all our 20 are top 10 students on I think every year we just also it amazed because I've never every time we mention this these GPS is there just amazing I remember back in my day I'm about 20 years ago I hardly saw students that did such amazing work and I just want to let you know that I want to congratulate you cuz those on your hard work in your great achievement we're very proud of you I can't wait to see you all the amazing things that you do also want to congratulate all our retirees are classified and certified certificate and staff you chose to be part of Lynwood for so many years I mean you're leaving imprint in our community and just hope that you enjoy all your your time and it's all administrators present Mercer County board members and community that is with us right now I just wanted to communicate that the Lynwood Unified School District along with the board members are united in this situation that is going on right now that is no war what we have seen in the last decade so and I will depart this time to just in from the store take them into town and give them leadership repair for the future and the future is like we were talking about racism racism is something that is a new Total nuface that we need to change and all their hands I'm very proud of all the students that I shall pass for a year City in and out bored and I feel very proud of Summer Sanchez Community Adult School Stephanie carbajal from Leonard High School play see beneath Aspire Valle Vista Valley and Parkway crucifer what they make it change sitting with us and it was a great experience also that 10 top students Raleigh mr. goody already communicated to the board that died Plaza Mexico one has to give them their names picture of the top 10 students official school to print and a billboard in the 105 Freeway they approached me and now mister grial is the one that is following up with a food that is going to be beautiful seeing them and from the freeway Mystic Place I've also thank you to all the certificated classified employees for all the years of service but I can say only when you feel sad or you feel that you miss the score embarking to be a volunteer visit your school San Diego going to feel happy so thank you very much and congratulations to all the students to all the students and thank you the staff for being with us in this difficult time thank you mister comedy mrs. Lopez Topher wanted knowledge the entire School District as a family my board and superintendent for all you reaching out to offer support to start a dialogue around 4 we sing that has tug at the hearts of all of us around the world a global mourning over the loss of life in the loss of dignity I think particularly now it has hit us in the vulnerable place if you're all recognizing our Humanity our role in ensuring that we are fighting back against Injustice and every form it is said that and Justice that were saying playing out on social media been captured on video is not new George Floyd that's was not the first of this time but for some reason it caught our attention in such a way that this one felt different on the scene of it seem to hurt more I think to draw more from us boats that had not been talkin about races in this you are now trying to understand what they can do to be a part to make sure that that type of Injustice doesn't happen again the tough part is we're still having explain to people how to Value every life I can't tell you how many conversations I've had trying to explain the differences between saying all lives matter and black lives matter the reality is that until there are no more contagious until no one is discriminated against for who they love or how they worship until every school is fun at the same level until women are able to make decisions on over there by a free from infringement and until black men are not dying in the streets on arm you cannot say that all lives matter and ID School District we must do our part to make sure that our district is free from sin racism and institutional racism as well make sure that we in every way possible make sure that every student has an opportunity to just to thrive regardless of the socioeconomic status and espresso direct we have a community that is strength is derived from our unity in our diversity and it's been beautiful to see the amount of people that are now committed having the conversation in the many ways rip off the scab of a wound that has hurt a lot of us over the course of the generations of our family I can speak to my family who moved here from Mississippi in the 1950s in the height of Jim Crow and felt discrimination even here in Southern California that this is the Legacy that has it been passed on from the foundation of this country and we're still having the spot and I was reiterated when we spoke to our really put our feet to the fire and asked us as adults why is this time different if your grandparents are talkin about this same issue and your parents have the same fight why should we believe this time will be different but like mr. Morales said something about this for this minute because I'm hopeful that when people are now paying attention and we can have honest dialogue about what it would take to root this issue for good with that said you know again I just want to reiterate the points that we said in our statement as you know is that the value of human dignity is what should Unite the very end of it nor the discussion needs to be happen happening unless we're talking about how we value the human dignity of everyone and what we saw last on last Monday was that a police officer abuse of authority violated his social contract to protect and serve and Rob someone of his human dignity in that has happened in so many forms as a district we're proud to stand against that type of Injustice and make sure our community as much as possible I want to commemorate in an honor our employees here are teachers and staff that are retiring but I see numbers like here for 42 years on this mind blown cuz I'm not even that old and 2000 working in the same place for that long is just outstanding and to do so at a level of Excellence that has allowed you to make impact across generations of people's lives I can speak to my family just teachers on that list who taught my older sister who just turned 51 and some that taught me as well so and that's very true of around Lynnwood sometimes have to just who taught their students children and that is reflective of the dedication of the people that live in working in this community and I don't know if mr. Supposed to give up the of the haha breakfast I thought that was a closely guarded secret but now the Secret's out and I'm looking forward to having my ha ha moment at some point in my career as well but you all that are retiring certainly deserve and the recognition you're getting but also the rest day that you've learned and hopefully you're going out in retirement with some gas left in the tank so you can still enjoy life and make sure that you make that the most of the time that you now have that speed up from Hamilton if you are students but the entire graduating class is it is so commendable how do you all persevere through this pandemic and distance learning what does a learning curve for it was a challenge to stay focus to stay engaged to login and I commend you for finishing this race to the end we're about a week away from graduation and I'm excited to have a moment to sell it I'm all different Thunder over the course of your your school career and it's pressing this in the senior year of that this had you know this tremendous challenges but what I would say is I think that I'm always in our younger generation because they're more and more Racine question why things are the way they are and watch these can't be better with more so I'll NE Atlanta to find solution about how to bring about change and making sure the role that they envisioned for their even their child is better than the one that they brought into so even or call it again as soon as Challengers to think critically and Innovative lie about how we move forward and knowing that we won't be able to repeat or fix the can we can we can definitely prepare a better future so I'm super excited to learn about the stories that we hear my students that go off to College and Career and hopefully most of them come home and work in Lynnwood and be a part of the change that that we are working for a steer citizen closing I think right now it's important to have those conversations around policy change Behavior change educating greater efficacy to make sure that we're not just talkin about what we value but it's in our everyday work and you were reflecting our values and how we treat people how we educate our kids I noticed after we hire all reflect our bodies as a district but also as a people respect into the very heart of everyone we come in contact with that I know we can't change everybody's heart and Minds you are not willing to have the conversation to be educated about the things that people are Marching In the street for I'm still ever hopeful and I still know that it is important and absolutely necessary to continue to push for and how bees conversation let me see make sure that we're doing our part cuz this is a righteous cause and I cannot reiterate that enough so again thank you all to you all have reached out for to check on me but also told me that reached out to be a part of conversations about Solutions in and how we secure real change in in this country and especially for our district as well so now we move onto item number 11 governing board resolution Nations an appointment we have three item 11a is coming to the Smith Center representative to the Board of Education recognize and honor bring that certificated employee retirees 11c is recognizing classified employees retirees wolf will take all three together is there and their motion the second discussion Brokaw please mr.
