Lynwood High School's Academic Decathlon squad dominated at the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Academic Decathlon competition, breaking school records with a whopping 22 medals, ranking 16th place out of 37 competing schools in the county.
The team – which won medals in all 10 subject areas ranging from art and interview to math and speech – took home eight Gold, 10 Silver and four Bronze medals, improving its score by 16% over last year.
Senior Geraldine Gil-Avila snagged an impressive eight medals – six Gold, one Silver and one Bronze. Not only was Gil-Avila the Team MVP but she was the top scorer for Division II Varsity, earning a $200 scholarship during the awards dinner on February 16.
Varsity team competitors included Elizabeth Chavez, Alyssa Shepherd, Tammy Cortes, Matteo Martin, Isabel Mendoza, Keilah Chavez, Geraldine Gil-Avila, Valerie Jasso and Karime Hernandez. Junior Varsity members included Philip Te, Kianna Flores, David Esparza and Keylla Esparza.
“I am so proud of our students’ amazing performance, including our departing seniors and our junior varsity team who are committed to taking our team to the next level,” said Custodio Gomez, LHS social studies teacher and six-year Academic Decathlon coach. “I would like to thank my school and district leadership for all of their support. It means a lot to my students and me.”
