Superintendent's Update

Dear Friends of the Lynwood Unified School District,

We have completed another successful year in Lynwood Unified! I am proud to announce that we recently celebrated more than 900 graduates and produced several prestigious scholars among them.

Firebaugh High School graduate Kimberly Wenceslao and Lynwood High grad Lesly Leon were two of just 300 students across the U.S. to receive the all-expenses-paid Gates Scholarship. Wenceslao will study psychology at Yale while Leon will pursue molecular biology at Stanford. Both embody the very best that our District has to offer.

In all, we celebrated nearly 400 seniors who are heading to colleges which speaks to the hard work of both our students and staff. We are continuing to support our college-going students by launching a partnership with Compton College that will provide graduates with priority registration, guaranteed admission, financial aid assistance and programs to help with college readiness starting with the class of 2019. We are ecstatic about the partnership, which will create a clearer path to college for our students.

This year was also a progressive one for our elementary and middle schools. Abbott Elementary is expanding its arts curriculum through a partnership with Turnaround Arts: California, which will provide up to $10,000 in financial support of students. Lynwood Middle School received a $250,000 science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) mobile classroom in October, and the learning tool will rotate to a new school this fall.

Through the work of our dedicated staff, our district was able to earn a few prestigious grants that will serve our students, including the American Honda Foundation which will provide $3.1 million to establish a STEM pipeline.

On a personal note, I want to thank all of you who helped me make a successful transition to the role of superintendent this year. I leaned on your expertise, commitment and encouragement more than you know, and I am grateful to work alongside all of you. Congratulations to all of you on a special year!

Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D.
