How Are Students Identified?

All students in grades 3-12 are eligible for nomination to the GATE program regardless of socioeconomic, linguistic, or cultural background and/or disabilities.  Students in K-2 are informally identified.  School staff members receive professional development on characteristics of gifted students to assist in the identification process.

Traditional and non-traditional instruments and procedures are utilized in the identification of gifted students.  Traditional methods include a review of STAR data, student portfolios, teacher/parent checklists and standardized GATE testing (Raven Plus and PSAT).  Non-traditional method or alternative identification system involving a cumulative points system can be utilized due to the number of English Language Learners and high poverty levels in the community.  By using both a traditional and non-traditional approach to identification, we are assured that all students have equal access to the GATE program.
