Superintendent's Update - August 2017

Dear Friends of the Lynwood Unified School District,

I am always inspired by the start of a new school year and the promise of fresh academic discovery. In 2017-18 we have the opportunity to build on the special achievements of our District and lead our students to future success. We have much to be excited about for the new year as we expand our programs and continue our focus on student excellence and college readiness.

This  summer, students and staff of our District traveled to Washington D.C. where we were again honored for reaching the “District of the Year” distinction, one of just three named in the nation by the College Board. Watching our students present for an auditorium of thousands was a special moment, and I firmly believe that this award is just a starting point for what we can accomplish as a District.

I am pleased to note a few new programs that will positively impact our students. We will be expanding our after-school computer coding club to help ensure we are producing 21stcentury learners. We will also be integrating new assessment software for English language arts, math, science and social studies along with increased student intervention and college preparation courses. A new Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) trailer will be arriving this year as students bring curriculum to life.

Our District will reduce air pollution and save approximately $20,000 annually when we add two all-electric school buses to our fleet. The buses are scheduled to arrive this fall and will produce safer, more environmentally friendly travel for our children.

We are poised to get off to an amazing start to the school year. Let us carry that momentum through each day as we make 2017-18 another historic year for Lynwood Unified.
